it's too warm to be this frozen

i am frozen and i don't know why. Is it depression? Is it because I'm not doing whatever it is that I should be doing? Is it because I'm just plain tired? Is it a personality defect? Pure laziness? Is it because I'm pregnant and my allergies are acting up? Am I just overwhelmed? WHAT IS IT? And really, more importantly, why can't I just DEAL like everyone else on the planet? This freezing up in the face of (fear? sadness? too much? life?) is bad for deer in traffic and bad for me.
The only way I can figure to unfreeze is to try each item and give it a jiggle to see if it frees me. Starting with the worst first. The IRS has contacted me regarding my former employer. This as at the end of last week -- I just called my attorney and updated him on the status of things. He is going to call the IRS agent on my behalf and get back to me. Poor birdybean is doing cartwheels making me feel guilty for stressing out so much.
In an effort to unfreeze more, I will finish laundry tonight and get the house properly straightened. We'll see what temperature tomorrow brings.

i'm a winner

or at least birdybean is. We won a lovie/blanket giveaway over at Simple Mom. Joe and I always joke that we are lucky in love... and in nothing else. So it's super exciting to be a winner! I sure hope birdybean reveals his or her gender next week so that we can head on over to Lovie Baby Blankets pick a lovie and blanket just for him or her.

Thanks, Tsh!

when you don't know what to do

do something else. :P So instead of worrying about Jordan, I'm joining a spring cleaning bandwagon from one of my new fav blogs, Simple Mom. I'm almost a month late, but I did Day One and feel super motivated to move on. I should let you know that I only did one floor and it took me two days. But that is totally just me. I'm sure normal peeps would knock this out in the recommended 2 hours. Here are my before and after pictures... oh, and my dining room only has before pictures. It shouldn't complain because the living room didn't even get a before pic.

is it juvie or juvey?

i had sort of planned on a life where i wouldn't really need to know how to spell it. However, this morning we learned that Jordan is in juvenile detention for 18 days for beating another boy up badly. What we really learned, though, is that the family has been lying to us over they year that he has been home. We've been told that his grades aren't that good but that everything is going okay. I don't think they put you in detention for your first offense. My MIL told Joe that he has made his own choices and that at some point you have to let go of them... he's fifteen. It all makes me want to cry and throw up and yell and cry. We are waiting on information to see if we can visit him tomorrow and hope to regain custody of him asap. I will update when I know something.

oh so much going on and so little of it moves me to record it. I've been working with my mom to find a new house in the school district we've selected for Nisey and today, for the first time, there was a house we liked. Exciting. And encouraging after about twenty houses that we didn't care for at all -- we were seriously getting worried and entertaining thoughts of her building on our property. Today we are working on staging her home for the market. It's all so difficult -- she takes my advice seriously and I just pray that it's good advice for both her and the girls.

Nora is rockin' and rollin'. We still use Thinkbaby sippy 'cups' with a nipple: My next hurdle with her will be to get rid of the nipple tops. After that, I will nudge her more towards potty training. A year ago she was SO interested in it and now she doesn't even want to talk about it.

Birdybean's big 3-D debut is scheduled for June 9th in the afternoon. Because I left my job, we need to switch our coverage over to Joe's employer. Only we can't do that until my coverage is terminated and I get official notification of it. I have tried and tried to get the information and will eventually get it... The problem is that I have no real way of knowing if the new plan will cover things nor do I know our true expense on any of it. BLAH BLAH BLAH, it all boils down to me hating having important things up in the air and having no control over getting them settled. It all makes me want to go back to bed.

i heart my crockpot.

this is cooking right now in crockpot, the kitchen is clean, and the dishes are running in the dishwasher. My house smells yummy, I'm going to have lunch and spend the afternoon with my BFF, AND my husband will be ever so pleasantly surprised by dinner. I followed most of the directions from the crockpot lady -- adapting it do what we had around. I'll update after we have it to confirm it's suspected deliciousness.

Alina did me a huge favor and clued me in to calling my doctor to check on my antidepressant dosage. I do have a lot going on and my dad did just die -- that said, I've been SO overwhelmed. I'm thrown off if I have to shift gears and if the phone rings, it fills my heart with a mix of despair and anxiety. (The phone thing is normally my first clue of depression.) I'm so excited to have been given the clue before it got any worse. I could have wasted the beautiful summer feeling off before I recognized the signs. I'm in my second trimester so I'm hoping we can do the adjustments as cautiously as possible. I'm going to make our appt for 3D ultrasound before I leave the house today -- the doc gave her referral so if Birdybean cooperates, we'll know her/his gender in early June in addition to checking out the palate and such.

Something nice before I close: Nora told me yesterday that I was her favorite girl. Heaven.

miscellany.

i have nothing specific to record but am getting out of the habit so am forcing a post. No need to read -- perhaps I should start a label for that. Just so you'll know. This weekend , we had three first communions. Very sweet (and very long and boring). It was good to see everyone and we even fit in a 'date' to go see Joel McHale. Chris Porter (from Last Comic Standing) opened for him. Both were very funny.

Joe and I laughed the whole time - what fun! We must remember to go out just the two of us even though it seems like a ton of work to make it happen. It just makes me like him more and more.
I've been missing my dad something terrible. Yesterday I had good cry when we drove by the funeral home. It's so hard to feel this pain and then know that everyone you love is feeling it too. It just seems like too much. I keep reaching for some cosmic feeling that he's here with me or at least he's happy beyond understanding.... nothing is what I grasp. I just want my dad back. In the simplest and most primal way, I want my daddy.
Last Friday, Nora and I got to hear Birdybean's heartbeat again. It was in the 150's. The heartrate old wives' tale and the Chinese Gender Chart both indicate that Birdybean is a girl. I can't wait to find out. I got a referral to the ultrasound specialist so we should be able to find out the gender in the beginning of June. Nisey really doesn't care for the name, "Birdy" so she insists that this child must be a boy to save it from this name. When I told her about the Chinese chart she replied, "Well, we're not Chinese."
Tonight, we're all going to see a few houses with my mom. One of them is a possible contender so we're going to see what the girls think about it. Should be fun as I always love hearing their perspectives.

its hard to stay at home

and i don't mean the gig -- i mean actually, physically staying. at. home. When we first decided that I would become a stay at home mom, I made a gargantuan list of things that I would do in each room of the house. Spring cleaning things, detail things, and things that I simply hadn't gotten around to while working outside the home. I was so excited and I figured I could do one room a day (with some exceptions) on any day that we actually would be home all day. My first day that this occurred, I learned that I had mistakenly left out a two and a half year old and a pregnancy out of my "room a day" equation. I got almost half the kitchen done and thought, "Oh! I'll just have to adjust my plan to one room every TWO days that we're home." Only... we haven't had another day at home. In two weeks. For real. That's not to say that we've been wasting time -- we've accomplished great and worthy things: Nisey will attend a new school come fall that is 50% African American, we've found Mom a possible new home near our home that will accommodate the new school district, we're working to put Mom's current home on the market by next week, we've gotten Susie's disability approved and have an appt with Job Corps for her, I'm working on some print projects for a local Breast Cancer walk, we've gotten the garden loosely 'started' and added a compost bin and rain barrel, we've read books, played, laughed and visited with friends and family, and most of the time we have clean, put away clothes, and some groceries. Next is a therapist for N, and college appointments for B. I could say that I need to learn to say 'no', but everything on that list is more important than deep cleaning and organizing. I'm sure there come a day when things are more settled and we'll get that list knocked out. Until then, it's a balancing act that I might as well learn to enjoy. Any tips will be greatly appreciate.

26 April 2009

pregnancy

{NO NEED TO READ} i realize this will be of little interest to anyone other than me, but want to record it as this is most likely my last pregnancy. With Nora, I didn't keep a journal or blog and the things I probably thought I'd never forget are long gone. Here are my current symptoms at 14.5 weeks: morning sickness (seems to have gotten worse in 2nd T), regular pain from stretching ligaments, STILL exhausted, sometimes feel like I can't catch my breath, occasional swollen hands/feet, heartburn, breasts that loved the 1st T so much, they're staying there, hair growth (specifically LEG hair growth), random cravings, runny runny nose... that's all I can think of now. The wonderful part is feeling Birdybean more often.

21 April 2009

things i don't want to forget

1) Nora calls raindrops rain 'piddows' (pillows)

2) Nora was messing with my hair. A lot. Repeatedly. Amazingly, she continued even after I requested she stop. I said, "Nora Grace! I said no." She said, "Nora Mama! I say YES!"

3) She found a WordWorld DVD thing from the Target kids meal that I had hidden as I don't care to mess with it. I told her it wasn't a toy that it was garbage and this upset her. She expressed this by throwing it. I said, "We don't throw toys." She said, "That not a toy!"

4) She says that she is growing a big sister in her belly and I am growing a baby in mine.

5) She likes to comb my hair and says things like, "It SO tangle!" and "I be gentle"

17 April 2009

adjustments

bliss is how i'm currently describing this having one job at home. We've got a good flow going but I've found that Nora is accustomed to her care provider being at her command. I remember C. teasing me that Nora would be a kid who grew up with a nanny - meaning spoiled. I laughed about it. Ha! I needed to clean the house today and Nora wanted me to play with her every moment and on command. I would straighten one room and then join her for a bit. At first, she was mad about this arrangement and insisted that I play NOW. But once she cried a bit about it, she started to play so nicely and I even heard her singing to herself. Beautiful sounds.

Random notes about Miss N.: Nora enjoyed playing with her water table today -- I put river rocks in the 'sand' side (my friend E. came up with the idea) and she just had a blast. She also loves to dig for worms and hold them to decide if they're the mommy, daddy, or baby, and then dig new home for them. Nora is also a really motivated weeder. This is going to come in handy once we have this garden going!

16 April 2009

loving it comes faster than i thought

staying at home, that is. I thought that it would possibly take months for my brain and heart and life to absorb that I really had quit my job. That each day belongs to me and my family to do the best we can... I was wrong. So wrong. It's day one of my SAHM life, and I. GET. IT. And it's wonderful. Nora and I have a pretty busy schedule for the remainder of this week, but then, guess what? We have NEXT week. And the next and the next. We will no longer struggle to balance the demands of two full-time jobs and family. I will no longer be eye twitching and throwing up from the stress of my stupid job. I am free to help my sisters and mom, garden, play, and form the life I want. Don't get me wrong... I'm sure that toddler company 24/7 leaves something lacking and that the daily rhythm of the home can get tedious. But I'm also sure that it's tons better than the job I just left. I wish I could bottle how grateful and free I feel today so that I can pull it out someday when I need it. I don't want to forget how blessed we are.

I'll leave you with a text from Joe that I awoke to this morning: "It's a great day knowing that you are home caring for Nora. Thank you so much for letting go of [my old company] and trusting in me and our relationship. I love you like crazy."

And here I thought it was all about me...

14 April 2009

the golden trimester

although i am in my second trimester, my body has yet to embrace all that the 'golden' trimester has to offer. I oscillate between nausea and hunger, I'm still exhausted, and my boobs still hurt if Joe looks their way (or if I move) (at all). Generally, I'm just a pleasure to be around. Here's a funny snippet from last night.

Getting to be past Joe's bedtime...
Me: Honey, would you get me a snack?
LONG PAUSE
Joe: Does it involve me leaving the house?
Me: No.
Joe: Gladly.

things i don't want to forget

1) Nora helped Joe make the grocery list. Notable items included cake, a puppy, and a baby.

2) Nora SWEARS she saw the Easter Bunny hopping down the road.

3) Nora still prays "...and bless Grandpa" after our dinner prayer.

4) When I told her that Grandpa and Grandma were my mom and dad, she said, " That TOO funny!"

5) I can feel Birdybean regularly now. What a joy.

karma and mystery, oh my

i am nothing if not a band wagon jumper onner. And so I bring you this amazing offer to copy the coolness of Chris of Sugarplum Swank.

Here is the offer: I hereby pledge to make something for the first 5 persons who respond to AND agree to the conditions of this blog/offer. This offer does have some restrictions and limitations so please read carefully:

I make no guarantees that you will like what I make. What you get is what you get. It could be a papermache statue of me, or a haiku, or a doll made of toothpicks. Or something that you have always yearned for in your secret heart but didn't even know until I gave it to you. Or something else.

What I create will be just for you. One of a kind!

It’ll be done this year (2009).

I will not give you any clue what it’s going to be.

Unless you live near me, it will be something that needs to be mailed, so you’d have to be willing to provide a viable address.

In return, all you need to do is post this text into a blog or bulletin of your own and make 5 things for the first 5 to respond to your note under these same conditions. IMPORTANT: This offer is null and void if you do not post your own blog/bulletin to pay this forward.

Anyone?

straight to the good stuff

there are no rules that say that just because sad and distressing things happen, i must dutifully record them before getting to the joy. Let's just go straight for joy today.
We heard Birdybean's beautiful heartbeat. A sound to behold.
Nora at Lincoln Park Zoo with a 'hippo [pause] pot. a. mus.' who she believes kissed her

and we're back

sorry for the interruption. My dad's sister (my aunt) passed away last week and when I searched her name for funeral arrangements, my blog was the only thing that came up. I figured it would be in my best interest to take it down for a bit. I have so much to possibly write about. Will see how the spirit moves me.

29 March 2009

blindsided. perhaps i have no heart.

i didn't feel like going to bed on time so i am sitting here watching "Blindsided," a documentary about a Jared Hara - young boy stricken with Leber's Optic Neuropathy which caused him to go blind at the age of eleven. A sad story, for sure. Although one of Jared's friendships, in particular, is a beautiful example of true friendship. But something is off. Really off. And it's his parents -his father, especially- come off as such selfish, ungrateful, entitled assholes that I have trouble summoning up any sympathy for anyone other than Jared. His father says things like he hated his wife because she had passed down this unknown, rare genetic disease to his son. He eventually leaves the family. They both dwell within their own misery about this horrible disease to the exclusion of enjoying their self-described, almost perfect life.

I'm sure I sound like a horrible, hard-hearted person, but I do feel for Jared. Jared, who I hope has no use for my sympathy because he seems to be creating a pretty nice life for himself. In spite of his ridiculous parents.

Please tell me that somebody else has seen this film...

28 March 2009

johna's prayer

from lunchtime yesterday:
Dear Lord,
Thank you for this day and thank you for our time with my dad. It was so nice to have him alive. This is really hard for us and my mom is really hurting and we're all hurting. Help us to get over it and forget it ever happened.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.

26 March 2009

bunco

well, i've passed a milestone in creating our community here. Last night I was officially invited to Bunco Night with ladies from church and their friends. It fills me with dread but actually sounds like fun -- bunco, food, drinks, little prizes and laughter. Dread, dread, yay, dread and yay. I feel compelled to partake in these things because I hope to create a full and loving community for my family. I dread these things for a ton of reasons...

UPDATE Saturday: I'm still sick so got a get out of bunco night free pass.

25 March 2009

wouder

day two no voice. When Nora woke up, I went up to her and whisper greeted her. She took my face into her two hands and yelled, 'WOUDER!!!!' That was a half hour ago. She is still crying over my lack of a voice and will not be consoled. I'm sitting here on the couch with her milk, favorite blanket, watching D.W., and waiting for her to come here as she's made it quite clear I should not be approaching her. What a horrible way to start our day.

UPDATE: She is now cuddled in snugly. We both needed this.

24 March 2009

i have no voice

and i like it. That sounds and feels sick to me, but it's true. It's a relief to take no phone calls -- to be so unreachable. I don't have to call the attorney. I don't have to do anything more than email for work. I'm off the hook on some personal obligations. My life is currently so out of my control that I relish something that disables me. This can't be right. But it sure is peaceful.

feeling the wind

oh, there's so much to post that i really don't know where to begin. Between missing Dad, keeping tabs on my mom and sisters, and being sick most of last and this week... what I really didn't need was for my work stress to evolve into legal stress. But it did after all these years... Y. thinks that perhaps frogs might rain upon our home or my hair might fall out next. I wouldn't be surprised. I won't write about it here unless I start securing the blog but my point is this: Right now, I feel extremely stressed and stretched to my limits in every way. This afternoon, I wanted to curl up in bed after work but Nora (my new NO NAP Nora) wanted to go out into the cool breezy gray day. As we sat playing in the sandbox, she sang and laughed and I prayed and just felt the moment. And it was good. All will be well.

randomness at 9 1/2 weeks

1) i am up at 2:13 am looking up whether or not i can feel birdybean move at 9 1/2 weeks. The jury leans towards no. But I'd swear I felt something butterfly-ish while I was lying in bed wondering how little sleep I will get tonight.

2) i dreamt the other night that i was preparing two bedrooms for my two babies. Nothing was going right and every effort I made to correct problems was met by more problems. Oh, and the real problem was that I was trying to build the rooms on top of a cemetery.

3) tonight nora was categorizing people as (mostly) animals. She and I were lions as were all other kids. Some friends of ours were kittens. Joe was a toucan. And others were chickens. When I asked her what grandpa was, she replied after thinking a bit, "the moon."

tributes

here is what was written and read by some of my us at Dad's funeral:

Denise, Age 14
A grandpa, a father, an uncle, and a friend. He stuck it out to the very end. In times of grief God brings us together. Like when today is rainy, tomorrow will be better. And if you didn't think that he was watching us while he was here, just think of how he's watching us now! Look up to the clouds and you'll see him smile. There's no need to drown yourself in your tears. And there's no need to frown because he's not here. So now I can say bye bye Daddy here on earth because God thinks that you finished your work here on earth. So don't be sad, smile, get glad. God couldn't have ever picked a better father to be in my life. My Daddy always did what was right, never wrong. I remember when he told me that I was strong and a strong woman I will be. And when I look up in the sky, Daddy will be smiling right at me. I cherish the days that I had with my father because you never know how much you loved him til you lost him. But I didn't lose anybody... I think we grew closer. Did you forget my Daddy was a soldier? So don't cry, here's a tissue wipe your eyes. Don't look down, look up high because my daddy's in the sky. In the end, everything will be okay. And no matter what I did in the past, he'll love me anyway. Even though I'm only fourteen, I know I'm young but you can see what a woman Daddy's made me to be. Because even though he might be gone, his love will still stay strong. So for everyone today, my daddy is still a grandpa, a father, an uncle, and a friend. And my daddy's love will never end.

Becca, Age 19, written on a coffee shop menu

I'm going to start out with some things Daddy used to say:

"Sarah's dad can do anything"

"If you don't shut the door, we're going to be heating the outside"

"Go ask your mother."

"What did your mother tell you?"

"You know you're my favorite, right?" (mind you, he said that to every one of us)

"Cheese and crackers!"

"Gimme some sugar"

"Tell me about your day"

They say that any man can be a father, but it takes a special man to be a daddy. My daddy was definitely a very special man. He was a kind, caring, hardworking, slow to anger, respectful, God fearing, and loving daddy.
He was also a fighter. He fought his sickness until the very end and even then left on his own terms -- at home, in his favorite chair, surrounded by his loving family. He always fought for what he felt was right. From making sure us kids had a proper home to getting our curfews extended or getting us ungrounded faster. He also tried his best to be a healer -- from band aids to broken hearts.
I have many memories of my daddy that I will cherish in my heart forever. I hope to someday find a man that is half the man my dad was and will remain to be in my heart. I love you, Daddy.

Joe, Age 39, notes for his speech
It is a joy and honor to be Bob's son-in-law. He has been an inspiration and role model
as a husband, father, and handyman.
He had an almost magical ability to get Lyle Lovett tickets at Ravinia -- where you could actually sit in chairs!
I had the good fortune of marrying his daughter on their 40th wedding anniversary where they renewed their vows.
This family is filled with his love and kindness. They welcome you with open arms and spirits.
His sense of humor is evident when Johna tells me jokes -- she knows which ones...
As far as a handyman he would always show incredible patience when I decided to "measure once and cut twice." He would be there to fix the problem. In his guidance and teaching, you might hear such things as, "Measure twice and cut once" which confused me because he would also say, "We're not building a piano here." Once I bent a nail with my hammer and he said, "Sure is windy in here!"
He also had a firm and sincere handshake. At the end of dinner prayer, he would always give your hand an extra squeeze.
Many of these things I'm passing to my daughter and nieces and nephews. Without his guidance, the projects will take twice as long and be half as fun. His beautiful family will always be a constant reminder of the most incredible and influential man I've ever known. I will always miss him dearly.

Mine, age 36, read by Y. bc I'm nowhere as brave as my little sisters, but she is.
When I was little (and even when I wasn't), my dad would fix the unfixable and find the unfindable. When a seemingly irreparable situation would present itself, he'd look at me and say, "Sarah's dad can do anything." (He also said this to each of my sisters, although oddly, he would change the saying to their name). I think Gina said it best that with Dad in the world, you knew that somebody had your back. It now feels unprotected and scary. He'd offer to mortgage the house to fund a dream or assure me that anyone who didn't think I was the best thing to come along was obviously blind and stupid. Now, I'm just not sure how we'll find our way without him. I don't know what to say to capture how loving he was and how loved he is. I can just share a few memories with you.

  • When I was a kid, he'd draw up plans for 'playhouses' at my direction. Multiple story creations with classrooms, fire poles, slides, and gymnastic areas. He never once told me it couldn't be done.
  • I think he told all of us that we're his favorite.
  • He gave us EVERYTHING.
  • He made up jokes. Funny or not, I love to think about him tossing them around in his mind.
  • I love coins. A lot. And I love them because I would always find them while walking with Dad. I was an adult walking with Dad and my little sisters when I figured out he threw them ahead of us to find.
  • He loved my mom. Like a LOT. Truly loved her.
  • In the glint of his eyes, you could see the little boy that he had been.

There are too many wonderful memories to share here today. If a man's measure has anything to do with how many people count him as their 'Dad', then my Dad lived a full and wondrous life. I used to be jealous when friends told me they wished he was their dad I now am only proud and forever grateful.

our last day together

i miss him so much.

i'll publish this one...

sorry for the lack of updates. I have three unedited posts that I suppose will stay that way. My dad is hanging in there, but is struggling and says he's knows he's not long for this world. Two nights ago, his blood oxygen saturation dropped to 40. Yesterday it was back in the 90's. My brother and his family are here from VA and we had family photos yesterday.

Nora is up. Must go. All is well.

05 March 2009

sometimes you feel like a

nora just walked into the kitchen hooting and making strange noises. I asked her what was going on and she said, "Ahdohknow! I dink I a MONKEY!"

04 March 2009

they add up

i am no financial guru but thought i'd share some recent experiences on saving money. I just got off the phone with my cable company and will now save $40 a month and get HBO free. I signed up with them on a special deal and, of course, that deal expired. I just called to ask if they could do anything to lower the bill before I start shopping around and what do you know? $40 a month. Hmmmph. I don't know whether to be happy about future bills or upset about past bills.

I also just read that you should clear out your browsing history and cookies regularly so that you get online vendors best deals. If they know you're a regular customer, they evidently give you lousier deals.

If you're not yet a www.upromise.com member, please become a member. You can save for a child's college tuition (any child) or use the funds to pay off student loans. I've been a member since 2001 and they have paid off over $1600 of our student loans. Free money. One penny at a time.

I'm sure you already use this or something like it, but just in case, after being sure that the online retailer is going to pay a percentage back through UPromise, I then visit www.RetailMeNot.com to see if there are any discount codes I can use.

And one more thing before I get off my pulpit, sign up for restaurant 'clubs' and email lists. We get coupons via email at least weekly from restaurants we already like! Oh! And check out www.restaurant.com for discounted gift certificates for restaurants in your area.

I also just read that you should take the coupons out of Sunday's paper and hold them for four weeks because the industry's cycle to push a product is one month coupon, then next month big sale at the grocers. I haven't tried this. I haven't even cut any coupons. But maybe one day. Anyhow, what thrifty tips do you have?

03 March 2009

prometrium to the rescue

my hcg beta levels came back good but my progesterone level is low. The Dr. wrote a prescription for Prometrium which I will start taking tonight. I will have another blood test tomorrow and then an appt on Friday. Doc said that the situation is 'cautiously optimistic' and I'll take that. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers and magazines and candy and work and, and, and.

02 March 2009

its amazing what you forget

well, i went to the doctor's office this morning and they drew blood to get hcg levels. Results should arrive tomorrow or the next day. (possible 48 HOURS. ugh. i'm hoping for much less) Still spotting, but still not doing anything more than spotting, so I've put myself on modified bedrest with a good book as I can't get any work done until I know. What amazes me is that Y., C., M., and my mom all remember cramping and spotting with my last pregnancy - I barely remember anything of the like. C. even remembers that my blood test showed poor hcg levels and still, Miss N is here. I will hold out hope due to their memories. And a lack of good options.
In addition to this, hospice is trying to remove my dad's bipap machine (which will kill him much faster) and sadly, I just learned that my best little Nisey has started cutting herself. Oh my poor baby. Tomorrow I will tackle the world. Today I just don't have it in me.

01 March 2009

out damned spot

i've been spotting all day. Nothing huge, but it has been all day and now I have some cramping. Y. reminded me that I had some spotting with my last pregnancy and I'm just hoping and praying that it's going to be ok. We told my dad yesterday that we were naming the baby after him girl or boy and I just can't bear to think of telling anyone in my family about anymore loss.

'Specially me.

27 February 2009

after all these years, gladys

forgive this discombobulated update. I am piecing together notes from the week.
Wednesday Night: Today we met with the director of palliative care to make arrangements for Dad to come home. Dad is resistant to having a hospital bed. Very resistant. While we want with all our hearts to accommodate his wishes, we must balance them with practicality and the state of my mom's back. We finally got it all settled and thought he would be sent home tomorrow via ambulance into a nice comfy hospital bed. In the afternoon he received his steroid treatment. He is on 'aggressive' steroid treatment and it makes him very agitated. This time was no exception. He was suddenly hitting his arms on the bed and then said, "After all these years, Gladys, this is how you're going to be? Well, I won't let you. I'm NOT having a hospital bed. AND the girls don't listen to me." Mom and I laughed which did not improve his mood. Funnily, when my mom told my sisters what he said about them listening, she said that they all replied at almost the same time that he must be talking about the NURSES.

On Thursday morning, we met with hospice and agreed to their care. The paperwork and logistics to do this are ridiculous. His O2 concentrator must be picked up by one company and replaced with the exact same thing by another company. Same with his bi-pap. Prescriptions are another confusing thing. It's just a lot in addition to understanding their philosophy and (not-so-impressive) methods. He was to be moved to the hospice unit at noon so that we could complete our training and get him home today. They finally moved him around 2:30 pm. This is not so, so late but after a week of disappointing news, this was a light at he end of the tunnel finally and any delays (unexplained and uncommunicated) were very frustrating for him and us. I should mention that on the same morning his general doctor stopped by and told my dad that he had anything from days to six weeks left. Considering that Dad didn't ask for this information and that the doctor isn't a specialist, this was poor bedside manner to say the lease. He really scared my dad and left him without much information.

When they took him down to hospice, they took him on a cart and Mom and I moved our cars because the wing is on the other side of the complex. When we got there, Dad was in his new room with the door shut and we were told that they were getting him settled. {you are about to find out why so many people die under hospice care} At one point, a nurse calmly asked me to check the set up of his bi-pap machine. I looked it over but said I'd get my mom because she knows the system and I do not. I got my mom and then my dad started to struggle. My mom looked at the system and said, "There's no oxygen hooked up!" We scrambled to get it for him and help him to calm down. Hospice gave him morphine. We questioned them on the lack of oxygen and were told that they weren't familiar with the system. I asked why they switched him over to a system they were unfamiliar with and got no response. We then decided that Mom would have to stay overnight. I must give Joe some major props here. He had just gotten home from work when I called him to ask him to take Nora to my mom's and figure out dinner with the girls. He did that, went over spelling words and bible verses, made sure baths were taken, and moved the cable system to the room that my dad will be in with a hospital bed. I am so thankful for him. Later, my pastor came by and offered us some comfort. He's such a good pastor and my dad really opened up to him. What a blessing. While talking, I asked my dad if he would give me a sign after he crosses over (as prompted by M.). He said that he would and when I asked what it would be he replied, "A twinkling in the night sky." Of course, I promptly said, "DAD! I see that every night! I need something that I'll KNOW!" He laughed and said he'll think about it. My pastor then told us that when we pass we are immediately with God and that he thinks this will make us even closer to the ones we can't bear to leave in that God is in all of us. He assured me that I would know the sign. A good thing about hospice care is that Dad can have whatever he wants to eat. He asked for a rootbeer float last night and I ran out to get it. He thoroughly enjoyed it. {Thanks to Y, he's coming home to his favorite famous beans.}

This morning while getting ready, Nora told me, "I want to be the little sister!" I suspect that this feeling comes from hanging out with Auntie Nisey last night. LOL - Nise never really got over Johna coming behind her... At hospice this morning, dad was doing well. A nurse came in to bathe Dad before going home. We went out to the waiting room and Mom wanted to discuss funeral arrangements. This is huge because my mom has been in a bit of denial. We talked about a few things - none of us have a clue how to do any of it or what it costs -- nothing big, just good that we talked. When we returned to his room, Dad looked good -- cleanshaven and such. Only... NO OXYGEN, again! For obvious reasons, I am more than pleased to tell you that Dad was brought home by ambulance and is resting comfortably. What a relief.

On the way home from the hospital today, I stopped at the store to pick up beer for Joe to have black and tans as a tiny little thank you for all that he's done these past few weeks. When I went up to the register, the owner had to look up the price. He told me that he never sells the 'expensive' beer anymore. I laughed and said what an indicator of the economy it was. He said, you're not kidding -- I have my regular Miller Light six pack guys who now have switched to Keystone.

While I don't know what comes next, I want to be sure that we take advantage of the time we have with Dad. I'm going to contact a local photographer to take pictures of all of us with Dad and will work with the girls to be sure that we all tell him whatever we need to or want to. If any of you have input on what to do next, I'm all ears and hearts and tears.

I will update on Nisey later. Thank you for all of your prayers and well wishes. They've meant the world. And Y, thank you for your famous beans. They make a Dad happy.

24 February 2009

we all still feel seven

johna's eighth birthday was yesterday. When I asked her how she felt, she said that she still feels seven.

Today, I feel about seven, as well. Tomorrow morning we will make hospice plans for my sweet dad. It's unthinkable and terrible. How I love him.

20 February 2009

and on the sixth day, she finally updated

{update Dad} on the way to the hospital one day this week i was listening to 'This American Life.' This episode was on last words. They quoted an epitaph from a New England gravestone: "it is a fearful thing to love what death can touch" A beautiful quote that was perfect for this week. Dad had a difficult week that ended on a positive note. He is in a step down care unit (not ICU and not a regular room) and on a bipap mask 24 hrs a day which means he still can't really talk or eat -- but it means no restriction on visitors so Johna and Nora can visit now. At least he is no longer intubated. He will never be intubated again as we have placed a partial DNR order specifying such. His body is no longer expelling CO2 properly. Normal level range from 35 - 45 and when my Dad came into the ER, he was at 153. The ventilator brought his levels down into the normal level. Off of the ventilator for 24 hours, his levels are already at 80. I do not know what will happen next -- only that he longs to go home and we want to take him there.

{update Nisey} Nisey returned to school on Wednesday. She and I texted back and forth throughout her first hour until her phone was taken away. My mom called both of us little shits for that~~ lol~~I figured her courage of showing up was enough. Anyhow, she said that her heart was about beating through her chest and she was so scared ~ especially of third and fifth hours where she would have to face the involved girls. She had to face her ex-best friend (we'll call her her NBF[thanks, Chris]). NBF was angry with Nisey because malicious redneck texter (MRT) was punished. NBF told Nisey that MRT didn't deserve it. Nisey told NBF that she didn't know what MRT did. NBF said 'she only TEXTED you.' Nisey told NBF that she didn't know what she texted, though... NBF then said, "Yes, I do. I was right there when she sent them." Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. Nisey has come through this week with flying colors considering all that is going on in her young life. She did call me one night and ask if we couldn't figure something out like Jordan did for high school. I assured her that we could... She deserves to have this handled as the family priority but with our Dad's health, it just hasn't been possible. She received the gift of a journal (thank you, A) and is using it. If I receive her permission, I'll share her first entry. It's amazing. She's amazing.

{update Bean} it seems unfair to blame my exhaustion on little bean given the week i've had. BUT, I'm so tired. Laughably tired. Two examples of how tired I've been: Nisey came to the hospital on Tuesday and I went to the ICU lounge with her to discuss her trip and going back to school and fixed a cup of coffee. And drank half of it. I told her that if this baby is hyped up it's all on Auntie Nisey. The next day, I was there all day and then went home for a bit and came back in the evening. I was kicked out of ICU for a shift change and went to the cafeteria and had some water and looked out the window... and saw an old white Buick skyhawk... the same car I had in college... and thought (just for a second, but still) maybe it was my former self pulling up! Other than that, I feel well. My hair is curly again -- my hair went straight while pregnant with Nora -- after having her, it returned to a sort of wavy set up. Now it seems curly again. That's my only update on bean. We're at 5 weeks and bean is the size of a sesame seed and tiring out mama.

{update Nora} nora is wonderful. She has been regularly cracking me up. Today before nap, she chose the 'Time for Bed' book. Each page, she'd yell to the character, "Don't go to bed! Stay awake! No Nap!" Its been so wonderful to be home with her these past two days (although my lack of working this week is stressing me out -- I have to remember that I attempted to quit 8 months ago because my family is a full-time job.) I had to take her to the doctor again because she's had diarrhea all week and little to no appetite. Doc says its most likely one of the numerous viruses which would cause the symptoms. Should be gone by Tuesday and if its not, we'll test further. Other than those symptoms, Nora is drinking her usual ton and happy. She's funny and lovely and sweet as sugarpie. After our meal prayer (which is a short prayer - the same every time), she says, and bless Grandpa. Without prompting. I love it and feel guilty at the same time.

{update You} thank you so much for your prayers, thoughts, emails, gifts, research, texts, and calls. I'm a lucky, lucky girl. Thank you.

16 February 2009

updates

update1: my dad is in the ER now as he managed to convince my mom to wait until today to take him. I hope and pray that they are able to care for him and send him home.

update2: the malicious redneck texter has been identified and was a female. I guess the rape threats were her cover? She has a suitably trashy name and has been disciplined at school and hauled into the police station with her parents. The Detective felt that the parents were very responsive as they took her telephone from her there and then. Nothing more will be done unless she does something more. I have no idea what Wednesday will bring. It just all makes my stomach hurt.

update3: Nisey's plane takes off any minute and she couldn't have looked cuter or more confident. I should have taken her picture. I can't wait to hear how well her speech goes tonight.

update4: did i nap away the first weeks and months of my first pregnancy? Because, seriously... I'm so tired. If I had my way, I'd be waking for feedings only.

15 February 2009

poor blessed all of us

i think i'm addicted to blogging because joe is on his way to help my mom get my dad in the car to go to the emergency room and pick up nisey so that we can get her to her flight in the morning and all i can think to do is come here and record it. Joe is so wonderful and I'm feeling just useless and scared. Jordan and Nora are in bed -- I'll go make up the couch for Nisey. Poor Mom -- she wanted to hold off on the emergency room until Nisey had taken off so as not to worry her. I know we are blessed beyond measure but all I can think right now is poor all of us.

13 February 2009

friday the 13th got a bad rap

i feel crazily and unbelievably blessed. I feel like I'm breaking some code telling the world but I just don't have it in me to contain joy.

day of reckoning

in the light of day and with some sleep under my belt, i'm going to do the best i can to record what yesterday was like for reference, if nothing else. First of all, thank you for your prayers and thoughts -- we felt strong and clear and certainly owe that to the support of our friends and family. Please forgive my disjointed recollection of the day -- lesson learned: I should have taken notes.

In the morning, I let her sleep late and then took her for a quick breakfast and to get her eyebrows and nails done. It was a nice morning and she said that she couldn't think about school because she was so scared. Mom was able to schedule a meeting with the middle school principal at noon. We just made it in time and went in with no plan because we couldn't predict what would happen. He greeted us and then told us that he was going to call us in because of rumors he had heard. He first told us what he had heard. It took amazing restraint to listen to him tell about a group of kids who went to a teacher because my 14 year old sister allegedly told them that she was HIV+ and was having unprotected sex with her unknowing boyfriend. They went to protect said boyfriend and out of concern for their own health. What cherubs. After he finished, I let him know that we were here because of the same situation and asked my sister to tell her story. She did a great job - started from the beginning, kept it all in order without getting emotional, and clarifying her virginity and lack of a boyfriend. She plainly told him that she had said no such thing and explained how Brittney had known about her status since September because she was her best friend and she trusted her. She also informed him of the threatening text messages she had received and while she was getting her phone out, she received another text from the same number.

Middle school principal (msp) was definitely taken aback at her status. He told her that he was always telling them that who they think is their best friend one day could be their worst enemy the next... blah, blah, blah. Almost as if he didn't understand the scope of this matter. He said he was unsure what the policy was to handle a matter such as this. I told him that surely there was a policy. He looked and looked for an "emergency procedure manual" and finally found it -- oddly, it didn't cover little girl with hiv; but, instead, had things for fire, earthquake, storms, bombs, and the like. He called the number that had been texting her and the voicemail message was just music. Country music. He called a detective friend to find out if they could get the phone record but had to leave a message. He seemed genuinely willing to help but not educated enough or confident enough in what to do. He expressed concern about training for the staff and how quickly it would spread. I reminded him that he and any other staff members had a legal obligation to maintain her right to privacy. He said, well, I know about the legal but we all know how things like this go. I told him that I worked with sensitive material at my job and that we certainly followed all HIPAA laws and standards of professionalism at all times. I told him that I did not think my office was exceptional and that I hoped that he at least required minimal legal compliance from his professional staff. He expressed a need to develop a plan on how to deal with the parents' and kids' concerns for safety. I had to remind him that only one child had a safety issue at this point. He said, well, 'some' people hold on to old fashioned views and will think they can catch it from a drinking fountain. I asked if they didn't cover this in health class and he said that they were supposed to but that they only touched on the minimum requirement because if they did any more on matters like this or sex they 'got a lot of parental feedback.' I said that that helped me understand all of the young pregnancies I'd heard of at his school. He said, "well, i agree with you, but others do not. They believe that parents should teach such matters." I told him that homeschooling was their option and that I did not approve of honoring commitments to ignorance. This really neither here nor there, but I'm just trying to get it all down. He said he didn't know whether or not to allow children to ask questions about HIV in class of the teachers. I told him that I couldn't think of a situation where that would be appropriate outside of health class. That even their sincere curiosity would not give them a right to break her privacy or further this nonsense. He kept saying that he'd need to talk to his superintendent and I agreed that we would need to know their official plan of action before we decided what to do. He recommended that she stay out of school this week and then return next Wednesday. (Ironically, she'll be out of town Monday and Tuesday to speak in another state about pediatric hiv -- at one point, we even offered to have that group come speak if the rumor did NOT die down.) It was his hope that by then, they'd have a plan and that the rumors would have died down. We had to agree in the absence of a plan.

He then offered to call the superintendent to see if he could join us. We gladly accepted that offer. The supt. is an older man who came in without introducing himself or shaking our hands. My mom finally introduced herself and us girls. He redeemed himself after being brought up to speed by MSP by replying, "Well, this isn't the first time we've had a student with HIV. We will not be conducting any additional training -- everyone is already trained and are not in danger. This is not the 80's -- people are more educated on HIV now." Supt also immediately jumped on the harassing text messages. He said that THAT was something they could do something about because it was illegal. He had MSP call the local police station immediately to find out what we needed to do to get the ball rolling. He thought that when dealing with middle school children, it was best to let the drama die without response unless absolutely required. He feels that responding to it at this point (talking to the students about HIV or the rumors) will feed the fire.
I don't even know where to fit this all in but part of all of these conversations was the issue of race. MSP and Supt seem to feel that there is no problem and were surprised to find that Nisey is called the 'n' word. I can get into this later but just can't take it all in this one bite.

[sidenote: just writing about this is making me fall asleep. Sleeping is my natural defense against just about everything. Thank goodness I don't need to defend myself from bears or lions.]

After the meeting was heading towards a close, I had to prompt MSP to tell her that he would be there for her and that he cared, etc. etc. I then asked her if there was anything else we needed to discuss and she requested to speak with Brittney in person as just disappearing for a week would possibly make Brittney madder and feed the fire. Seriously. Smart. Kid.

We then left and went to the police station to make a report. At first, the officer seemed annoyed at our involving the police, but as he read the messages, he seemed to understand the gravity of the situation. He called the number, left a threatening voicemail requesting and immediate call back. He informed us that they only way they could get the number and information was to go to the DA and get a subpoena. I told him that I had already ordered a search on line and would share the results just as soon as I got them. He was glad for that because he said that unless the text messages continued and escalated, they would most likely not get a subpoena. I am still waiting for the report to see if they were able to get the owner of that cell number.

So, the plan:
  1. Nisey will stay out of school until next Wednesday, Feb 18. School will prepare her homework for this time and Mom will pick it up this afternoon.
  2. Nisey will refrain from any contact with the students involved for this week, we will get her a different phone number and ensure that her MySpace, etc. are all set to private.
  3. We will remain in contact with the police and school administration -- they will do the same.
  4. Nisey is to immediately go to MSP if anyone says anything to her rather than engage them.
  5. We need to get a better plan.

I'm sure I've left out a ton and there are a million nuances I should add. For now, this is all I can do. If you read this garbled report, God bless you and your brain and your eyes.

how could they

that little gem is on my little sister's myspace page. Please do not think that we allow/encourage such language, but it's myspace, she's a teenager, and really, it's pretty funny. And apt. And so appropriate for today's post. One more caveat: if you know my family, I beseech you to hold the information I am about to share in the strictest of confidence. I only know of a few readers who have that crossover and I am certain of their loyalties. If there is someone else and you feel unable to maintain complete confidence, please leave now. I need this place and don't want to censor my story.

My little sister was born with HIV. She is wonderful, bright, loving, kind, funny, enchanting, and healthy. Her supposed best 'friend' was angry with her and chose to share her status with another person on Monday. My sister dealt with it as best she could. She was out of school today because she had to go to clinic. This afternoon, she began receiving horrible phone calls and text messages. Here's a sample to help you understand: "UR A DISGUSTING WHORE WITH HIV!!!! WE ALL KNOW IT!!!!" My sweet baby called me so hysterical I couldn't understand a word. And when I finally understood her words, I could not understand this world. All I could do to help was go to her. I was out at a client location and left to pick up Joe and Nora and we went to Mom and Dad's for dinner and a strategy meeting: Here's what we came up with: Tonight, she'll stay here and tomorrow morning I'll take her for a manicure and to have her eyebrows done. We'll then have a meeting with administrators at her high school with our mom and hope that we have a workable plan that allows her to return to school feeling strong and safe. That's all we have. That, and your prayers, which we covet.

your pony days are over

i bet when the pony express started, it was innovative and exciting and top of the line. And we all know the pleasure that receiving a letter in the mail brings. But let's get serious, US Postal Service, you haven't really been innovative or exciting for a long time. Your monopoly on how we transmit information is in grave danger and you don't seem to care all that much. Telephones, faxes, emails, .pdf's, UPS, Fedex, texting and more -- they're all lining up to take your place. And what's your response? Better customer service? Lower prices? Faster or more reliable service? More convenient service? No, no, no, and a resounding no. In fact, you're sort of known for your difficult personality and unreliable service. You even have you're own term for disgruntled violence... I'm quite certain that some other company could make a go of a business that gets paid - what? I'm guessing here- a dollar a day per adult living at an address? I bet that company could do it without being crabby or shooting things up. They might even get a convenient drive through window. Which is really the point of my post. Why can't you provide a drive through window? Each time I get out of the car to stand in line to buy postage or send a package, I dislike you a little more.
Dislikingly yours,
Sarah

PS - don't defend yourself with internet options because you charge for shipping which is, for some reason, laughably ridiculous to me.

they call me croshady

ok. they really don't. I just thought I'd share this for the enjoyment of you crafty ladies out there. At church each Wednesday, we have dinner and a little 'program.' It's fun and Nora loves going to play with the children. Last week, the program was "Learn How to Crochet." I was pretty okay with my first attempt.

Until I saw that the first attempt of other's was actually rectangular and even...

my girl

nora has been exploring the concept of discipline lately. When she is disobedient, I might ask,"Do you need a time out?" She used to reply 'no' and straighten up and fly right. She now says, "Yes" and promptly marches herself to the step we use. She waits until she is seated to start crying or yelling depending upon her mood. When I go to her, I explain why she is in timeout and request an apology. She jubilantly says, "I sorry!", gives me a big hug, and goes off to do whatever it was she needed to do in the first place.

today at dance class, nora did not participate at all. I'm not sure what to do about this. Instead of participating in the class, she wore her ballet skirt on her head like a nun's habit and hung off the bars and looked at herself in the mirror.

the other day, nora wanted me to play something with her. I explained that I was cleaning and that I'd play later. Nora brought a rag to Joe and said, "Here, Daddy, you clean now."

i didn't think there were any true games out there that we could play with a two year old, but nora found a "whackamole" hand-me-down game and she LOVES it. We've had such good times whacking those moles.

nora is now saying that things are her 'favorite' or that she LOVES them. I love this. I bought her Fruit-a-bu snacks (which I have trouble finding around here) and she took them, hugged me, and said, "THANK YOU, mama! These my FAVORITE!"

nora's babysitter was reading a book to her today. She pointed to a picture of a spider and asked Nora what it was. Nora replied, "Gross."

things that are currently adding to my happiness

my almost nightly delicious smoothies
plus plus

if Aveeno didn't do such a great job, this Body Shop Samsuta Body Butter would be my favorite lotion based upon its scrumptious smell
but, Aveeno DOES do a great job. Even my skin doesn't itch with it.

first ear infection

as someone born with a cleft palate, i have endured numerous surgeries -- about a third of them on my ears. Since finding out at the 3D ultrasound that Nora did not have a cleft palate, I've marvelled at my daughter's healthy structures. For real. Marvelled. And felt so grateful. I still do, but on Friday afternoon after her nap, she complained that her ears hurt. She's never complained of this before so we knew something was wrong. Fortunately, the doctor's office fit us in at 5:30 that evening to confirm our baby's first ear infection.

We're quite certain she will be a doctor given her accurate self diagnosis.
